DRAFT VERSION
The large (in size? ambitious?) archive (project? collection?) of the Mundaneum is developed by Paul Otlet with support of Henri Lafontaine at a time when occidental colonialism is at its height and the first tensions (between what and what?) are only starting to manifest themselves (who is manifesting to who? who's tensions?) while at the same time war is at the door of modern European society. In this context it is important that Henri Lafontaine, though constantly energized by Paul Otlet's encompassing view of classification systems and norms (wondering if it is better to use the term 'standards' instead of 'norms'?), links the Mundaneum project strongly to an ideal of achieving peace through knowledge of the world. The Mundaneum archives are constituted with an intentionality, a major effort is made to include alternative topics such as the well known archives of the feminist movement in Belgium but also information on anarchism and pacifism. Furthermore the project is rooted in a larger network of associations and meta-structures which have as an objective to structure an international network for civil societies. This is a conscious process of thought, structured in a larger theoretical framework developed by Lafontaine. This process takes place in the context of the general internationalisation of society, already becoming crucial at the end of the 19th century, while at the same time the social gap increases due to the booming industrial society. This (gap?) was addressed in Brussels by the brand new discipline of sociology [1] that tried to formulate something that would be a legal engineer (what do you mean?) to address social inequalities. Otlet and Lafontaine spent a large part of their lives on attempts to formulate a mondial society. While Lafontaine clearly roots his thinking in a strong civil society organization, according to Benoit Friedman, Otlet is the first person to use the term Mondialisation in French (seems with this phrase you set up a contrast between Lafontaine and Otlet that I don't understand from this sentence?) [2].
The communication systems associated with the Mundaneum were conceived in between the two World Wars. Some of them such as the Mondothèque were imagined as prospective possibilities, but others were already implemented at the time and formed the basis of an international communication network, consisting of postal services and telegraph networks. Otlet and Lafontaine's project took place in an era of international agreements over communication networks. It appears that associative structures (which ones?), acted as networks of information-sharing organizing modalities of exchange to the general benefit of civil society. It was also the epoch of international agreements between countries, structuring international life from diplomacy to normalisation; some of these structures still form the basis of our actual globalized organization, but they are all challenged by private capitalist structures. How is the development of the Mundaneum project related to the development of the actual knowledge economy?
